The City of Calgary’s Law Department is looking for an experienced Senior Labour Relations Lawyer to join its in-house legal team. The chosen candidate will provide counsel to The City’s Human Resources (HR) business unit and City leadership in general, necessitating a broad practice that includes labour and employment issues, as well as occupational health and safety (OH&S) and human rights concerns. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Provide legal and strategic advice and recommendations on labour relations (LR), employment, occupational health and safety, and human rights issues.
  • Draft and analyze a broad range of associated agreements and papers.
  • Represent the city in labour arbitration, mediation, and other hearings.
  • Work proactively with the LR team on a variety of topics and issues, including those relating to The City’s ten distinct collective agreements.
  • Mentor and support the team of LR lawyers in the City’s Law Department.

Qualification

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), or equivalent degree from an accredited university, as well as active or eligible membership in The Law Society of Alberta.
  • At least 5 years of experience in labour and employment law is required; however, those with at least 8 years of experience will be given preference.
  • Experience holding hearings and dealing with public sector unions will be regarded as advantageous.
  • Success in this role necessitates strong drawing and analytical skills, demonstrated self-management abilities, well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, the capacity to thrive in a collaborative setting, and the ability to be flexible and innovative in meeting business needs.

  • Lawyer 2 $103,249 – 158,137 per annum (typically 5-8 years’ experience)
  • Lawyer 3 $118,148 – 185,884 per annum (typically 8+ years’ experience)
